CHAPTER 263.

VOLUNTEER.

AN ACT TO PROVIDE FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT AND 23 of 1939.

G.N. 187 of MAINTENANCE OF A VOLUNTEER FORCE, 1964.

[27th February 1939.] [Commencement 17th May 1939.] 1. This Act may be cited as The Volunteer Act. Short title.

  1. In this Act, unless the context otherwise Interpretation.

    requires'appointments' includes accoutrement and equipment of every kind, other than clothing;

    'Commanding Officer' means the person for the time being entrusted with the general administration of the force, and in the event of there being no such person, means the officer who is for the time being highest in rank in the force;

    'force' means the Bahamas Volunteer Defence Force;

    'Governor' means the Governor acting in his G.N. 187 of discretion; 1964, s. 11.

    'officer' means a person appointed in accordance with section 4 of this Act;

    'prescribe or prescribed' means to prescribe, or prescribed, by regulations made under this Act;

    'volunteer' means a member of the force not being an officer thereof.

    PART I.

    ORGANIZATION.

  2. There shall be a Volunteer Defence Force to Establishment be called the Bahamas Volunteer Defence Force which Foreun.

    Appointment 4.-(1) The Governor shall by commission of officers of the force. appoint the officers of the force who shall be British subjects with such ranks as he may from time to time think necessary; such officers shall have such rank and authority in the force as are held by officers of the corresponding rank in Her Majesty's Forces and their duties shall be the same as are prescribed for officers of the Army in the Queen's Regulations.

    (2) No such commission shall be deemed vacated by death or retirement from office of the Governor by whom the same was issued.

    Enlistment of 5. It shall be lawful for the Governor to accept volunteers, the services of persons who are British subjects resident in the Colony whom he may deem suitable as volunteers.

    Conditions of 6.-(1) Every volunteer shall be deemed to have enlistment. been duly enlisted when he has(a) signed the muster roll; and (b) taken and subscribed the oath of a'legiance which may be administered by the Commanding Officer or by an officer deputed by the Commanding Officer to administer it.

    (2) Every volunteer shall upon enlistment be subjected to the provisions of this Act and of any regulations and rules made...
